So, how does a graduate engineer suddenly and radically change course, and in a sense
start all over again in a seemingly unrelated field? What took pl;ace may well be a
“natural” for the truly open mind.
It was graduation day and I was talking with Bill Hawkins, perhaps the most admired
man in the House and completing his year as President of the student body.
“Bill” I said “ I am so proud of you going into medicine and you will be the best”.
I stopped! A few seconds at most went by. “Bill, I am going to med school too. I will
not spend the rest of my life saying I should have been a doctor”. Instead of going to
MIT to an aeronautical engineering career, I went home to Lafayette, enrolled at UC,
and began my required year of pre-med before an intended return to
Stanford and Medical School.
With this background summary in view, I must now get on with the story of DISCOVERY
as I view it based on my own experience. Surely the foundation has been laid.
